Opposition to a plan to realign Highway 101 in Richardson Grove State Park in Humboldt County. CalTrans says the work would improve truck access to a narrow stretch, and a court has ruled it can go forward. About 60,000 people have signed a petition to the Governor urging him to step in and halt the project. They say that because the road runs so close to the ancient trees, cutting into the ground would harm the trees’ root systems. CalTrans says no trees would be removed and that workers will take precautions to protect them. The governor’s office isn’t commenting.
