Ukiah has announced a new scaled-back plan to deal with its status as a regional hub that serves more than just its official population of 17,000. The proposal updates an effort to realign the city’s boundaries with the services it provides that stalled amid opposition last year. The new annexation plan has two options. One is called The Sapling Option, that focusing on established service areas, while the other is called The Acorn Option, with a smaller footprint. Not everyone is sold on the idea. Some residents are voicing concerns that bringing in more people might actually cost the city more in services than it gains in new property taxes. The city has launched an address look-up tool on its website so you can see exactly how these options affect your property. If you want to have your say, there is a community workshop this Thursday, April 30th. It starts at 5:30 p.m. at the Ukiah Valley Conference Center. City leaders emphasize that no final decisions have been made yet. The proposal still needs to clear the City Council and the Local Agency Formation Commission before any lines are officially redrawn.
