California lawmakers are taking a closer look at the state’s struggling public defender system. A new bill would require counties to report how many cases public defenders are handling and what resources they have available, after investigations uncovered overloaded attorneys and shortages of defense investigators in some counties. Supporters say the state can’t fix the problem without first seeing how bad it really is. The proposal is now moving through the Legislature as counties push for state funding to help cover the costs.
