Traffic Safety tops the agenda for the Clearlake City Council. Among the items up for discussion Thursday evening is a highly anticipated vote on the Dam Road Roundabout Project. Slated for the intersection of Dam Road and Dam Road Extension, the project is designed to smooth out traffic flow and drastically improve safety for local pedestrians. Officials say they received three bids for the construction. Ghilotti Construction has come in as the lowest bidder at just under $2.7 million dollars. Council members will vote whether to greenlight City Manager Alan Flora to officially sign that contract, which includes a ten-percent buffer for any unforeseen costs. The council will also look at the bigger picture of roadway safety by voting on “Vision Zero”—a nationwide strategy aimed at eliminating traffic fatalities and severe injuries. Public Works Director Adeline Leyba says the city is currently battling ongoing issues with speeding, distracted driving, and aging infrastructure. While adopting the Vision Zero framework won’t cost the city anything upfront, officials say it is a vital policy shift. More importantly, it puts Clearlake in a much stronger position to score lucrative state and federal transportation grants down the line. The meeting kicks off this Thursday, May 21st, at 6:00 PM at City Hall on Olympic Drive.
