Questions are still swirling around the old Georgia-Pacific mill site in Fort Bragg as cleanup and redevelopment plans continue moving slowly forward. Residents packed recent public meetings to hear more about toxic contamination left behind from decades of mill operations, including chemicals linked to cancer and environmental damage. Experts say some sections of the oceanfront property may need long-term restrictions because the contamination is so difficult to remove. At the same time, community surveys show many residents want the land cleaned up and opened for recreation, housing, and future development.
