
California’s effort to crack down on student cellphone use is moving forward, but not as aggressively as first planned. Lawmakers scaled back a proposed statewide ban after school districts complained a one-size-fits-all rule would create confusion with policies schools are already preparing to launch this summer. Even so, supporters say phones are hurting student attention spans. Some California districts that already banned phones say they’ve seen fewer fights, less bullying and better classroom focus since the changes took effect.
