Ukiah city leaders are trying to clear up confusion about where local sales tax money actually ends up. Officials say most of the city’s 8.8 percent sales tax goes to the state and Mendocino County, while 2 percent stays with the city. That local share helps pay for services like police, fire protection, parks, recreation programs, and street repairs. The city says a proposed annexation project would not change the sales tax rate for shoppers inside city limits. Instead, the city and county would gradually share part of the tax revenue from newly annexed areas over the next 15 years.
