Ukiah High School’s innovative Música Norteña ensemble program is gaining national attention, recently featured in the April 2026 issue of Teaching Music, a leading publication distributed to music educators across the country.
The article, titled “Música Norteña: A Mexican American Pop Music Ensemble Class to Better Serve Our Latine Community,” highlights the growing importance of culturally responsive music education and points to Norteña ensemble classes as a powerful way to engage students.
According to Teaching Music, traditional school music programs do not always reflect the cultural backgrounds of all students, contributing to lower participation rates among Latino students. The article notes that Música Norteña offers “an updated response for teachers to provide a multicultural, popular outreach to students who are traditionally underrepresented in school music education.”
The publication also emphasizes that Norteña ensemble classes are not only culturally relevant, but practical to implement, citing their accessibility, flexibility, and strong connection to students’ lived experiences.
Ukiah High School is recognized within the article for its contribution to this work, including the leadership of Audrey McCombs, Music Director at Ukiah High School, whose program is helping bring this approach to life for students.
Superintendent Deb Kubin praised the program and its impact on students:
“Música Norteña ensemble classes represent exactly the kind of learning environment we strive to create – culturally relevant, accessible, and deeply engaging for students. When students see their culture reflected in the classroom, it strengthens connection, confidence, and a sense of belonging. We are proud to see Ukiah High School recognized as part of this important work.”
Música Norteña, a genre rooted in northern Mexico with strong influence across Mexican American communities, continues to grow in popularity among younger generations. By bringing this music into the classroom, Ukiah High School is helping bridge cultural connections while expanding opportunities for student participation in the arts.
The community will have an opportunity to experience the program firsthand at an upcoming performance:
Música Norteña Concert Thursday, May 8 6:30 p.m. The Lot on Main – Ukiah
The concert will feature student groups from the program along with special appearances, showcasing the energy and cultural richness that have made Música Norteña such a meaningful addition to Ukiah High School’s music offerings.
This national recognition highlights Ukiah Unified School District’s ongoing commitment to fostering inclusive programs that reflect and celebrate the diverse backgrounds of its students
