A decades-long effort to redesign downtown Gualala is now moving ahead despite lingering controversy. County officials rejected an appeal that tried to restore more native landscaping to the project along Highway 1. Local advocates argued the plants were a key part of the original vision for a safer, more welcoming downtown. Officials say the landscaping was reduced because no agency was willing to take responsibility for maintaining it. Construction on the streetscape improvements is expected to start later this year.
