A local high school music program is hitting a high note on the national stage, with its focus on the unique sound of Northern Mexican music. Ukiah High’s “Música Norteña” ensemble is being recognized for breaking barriers and bringing the sounds of the community into the classroom, featured in the April issue of Teaching Music magazine—a top publication for educators nationwide. The article spotlights how Music Director Audrey McCombs is using culturally relevant music to better serve Latino students. Superintendent Deb Kubin says, When students see their culture reflected in the classroom, it strengthens connection, confidence, and a sense of belonging. National experts say traditional programs don’t always reflect the diversity of the student body, leading to lower participation. However, the district says that by including that unique sound of northern Mexican music in the curriculum, it is bridging that gap and expanding the arts for everyone. If you want to hear the award-winning ensemble for yourself, you won’t have to wait long. The community is invited to a live performance at The Lot on Main in Ukiah on Thursday, May 8th, at 6:30 p.m.
