A new California bill would require higher pay and more training for private security guards and give unions more power to organize. Under SB 1203, companies would need union agreements to offer use-of-force training, which would guarantee higher wages and overtime. Private security guards in California make about 44 thousand dollars a year, at poverty level, even though their industry earns 34 billion annually. There are about 330 thousand security guards in the state. Security companies warn the new rules could raise their costs, adding about one billion dollars in costs annually. They also say it will reduce the number of guards.
