A major earthquake off the northeastern coast of Japan triggered tsunami alerts and warnings overnight. The U.S. Geological Survey put the quake’s preliminary magnitude at 7.4, while the Japan Meteorological Agency called it a 7.5. Tens of thousands of people were told to evacuate to higher ground. Officials say there is no expected tsunami threat to Hawaii, Alaska or the west Coast of California.
