The Clearlake City Council is getting an update this week on the city’s Blue Zones certification and will also promote Public Safety Telecommunicators Week.
The Lake County Blue Zones Project defines itself as encouraging change in the community that leads to healthier options by supporting environments that make healthy choices accessible and sustainable. Lake County News says in addition to other agenda items, the council will also present a proclamation declaring April 13 to 19 as Public Safety Telecommunicators Week. The meeting is set for 6 tomorrow night, in the council chambers at Clearlake City Hall.
The CalFire Mendocino Unit is running a vegetation management prescribed burn on the Shamrock Ranch. It aims to treat 1,000 acres or so of chaparral and understory vegetation within oak woodlands and mixed conifer habitats. Cal Fire says the goal is to create a plethora of burned vegetation and islands of unburned habitat. The Shamrock Ranch is located east of the 101 and southeast of Laytonville. Mendofever says the burns will continue intermittently, weather permitting, until May between 8 a.m. and 3 p.m. each day. It will bring California one step closer to meeting state goals outlined in the California Fire Plan and the California Wildfire and Forest Resilience Action Plan.
Fishery regulators are proposing banning commercial salmon fishing along the California coast for a third year to aid Chinook salmon recovery. The Pacific Fishery Management Council voted 13 to 1 in favor, with the National Marine Fisheries Service expected to adopt the recommendation in May. They also suggested allowing limited recreational fishing for the first time since 2022, with set days and strict catch limits.
