Big changes are coming to Mendocino County’s legal cannabis industry after a series of votes by county supervisors last week. Growers will no longer pay the county’s minimum cultivation tax based on the size of their permits, but they will eventually see the business tax return to 2.5% of gross sales in 2027. The county is also wiping out years of delinquent cannabis taxes for some former operators, saying many of the debts are basically impossible to collect. Starting January 31st, 2028, cannabis businesses will also need to be current on taxes before renewing county licenses. Not everyone on the board agreed with the tax forgiveness plan, with some supervisors arguing it rewards growers who walked away from the system.
