California could soon look south of the border to help deal with its doctor shortage. A new proposal called the California Physician Expansion Act would allow certain doctors from Mexico to practice in the state under supervised provisional licenses. Supporters say California is currently short thousands of physicians, especially in underserved communities, and bilingual doctors could help close some of those gaps. If lawmakers approve the plan, the new licensing program would launch in 2027.
