A case out of Mendocino County is putting a spotlight on how immigration enforcement is being handled. Thirty-nine-year-old Otis Ffriend was taken into custody by federal agents during what he thought was a routine check-in, even though his family says he had permission to be in the country. ICE says he’s under a removal order, but his attorney argues he had legal protection from deportation. He was taken out of the area but released less than a day later after a judge stepped in. Now, the situation is leaving a lot of people wondering how something like this could happen.
