It’s been a whiplash winter in the mountains. Not enough snow–then, more snow than they know what to do with. The bottom line–snowpack in the Sierra Nevada is only 68 percent of where is should be as we head into March–meaning there could be more risk of an active summer wildfire season. Odds are low that the moungtians will reach the critical 100% snowpack level by the end of the measuring season, April 1st. Even so, water officials say the reservoirs are full–even more so than average–meaning the odds of a summertime drought are low. Other western states have a more serious problem, with the dry and warmer weather leading to lower-than-usual water levels on the vital Colorado River.
