Starting January first, workers across California will see a small bump in the state’s minimum wage. The hourly rate rises by 40 cents to $16.90, part of an annual adjustment tied to inflation. Even with the increase, housing advocates say minimum wage workers still struggle to afford rent in much of the state. California is one of nearly 20 states boosting minimum wages next year, and some cities are going even higher on their own.
