The California Fish and Game Commission has extended the ban on diving for the once-plentiful Red Abalone in Northern California until 2036. The ban first went into effect in 2018 after the abalone population went into a rapid decline caused by warm ocean temperatures and an outbreak of the Red Tide. For centuries, Red Abalone was a dietary staple for Native Americans and became sought after delicacy, with diving a major recreational activity in coastal communities like Fort Bragg. No longer. A Mendocino County diving group called the Watermen’s Alliance hopes that someday, limited harvesting of Red Abalone can resume, but that won’t happen now for at least another ten years.
