A small earthquake shook parts of Northern California on Sunday, but there’s no sign of any damage. The U.S. Geological Survey measured it at magnitude 3.5, centered about 11 miles southeast of Redway in Humboldt County. It hit just after 2 p.m. at a shallow depth of around three miles. Local fire and sheriff’s officials say they haven’t received any reports of injuries or damage.

California’s commercial Dungeness crab season won’t open until sometime around the New Year as wildlife officials try to protect whales and sea turtles still migrating along the coast. The state says entanglements have been unusually high this year, and fishermen agreed to hold off despite the financial hit. A new risk review is planned for mid-December to see if it’s safe to open. For now, crab lovers will have to wait a little longer for their holiday catch.

A wild chase on Highway 101 near Willits topped 100 miles an hour Sunday night before ending in a foot pursuit, according to law enforcement. Officers say the driver sped south, then turned back north before ditching a black Honda near West Valley and McKinley. The suspect’s name hasn’t been released, but police say the chase started as a failure to yield. Wet roads made the pursuit even riskier as officers trailed the driver onto Highway 20.

The Lake County Board of Supervisors meets Tuesday morning with a full agenda that includes a controversial bioenergy project near Upper Lake. The proposal would turn forest debris into energy to help cut wildfire risk, but an appeal argues the project wasn’t properly reviewed. The board will also look at raising waste processing fees by nearly five percent and renewing contracts for mental health and child care programs. The meeting begins at 9 a.m. in Lakeport and will be streamed live online and on Channel 8.

For the first time in more than six decades, Lake Mendocino’s water management rules are getting a major upgrade. Officials celebrated last week as the Army Corps of Engineers formally adopted a forecasting system that uses modern weather data to help store more water without raising flood risk. Congressman Jared Huffman called it “long overdue” and a model for how climate-smart science can guide local water policy. The system has already helped Lake Mendocino hold onto thousands of extra acre-feet of water in recent years.

Mendocino Coast Clinics wants women to think about breast cancer screening year-round, not just in October. Healthcare professionals say yearly mammograms should start at 40, and earlier for women with higher risk or a strong family history. The clinic will host a MammoVan on Nov. 4 from 9 to 4, offering 3D mammograms, free coffee, and giveaways. Doctors say catching breast cancer early can make all the difference and they advise you to get checked and talk openly about your health.
