As the new school year starts, some Lake County teachers will have newly learned skills to navigate their classrooms. The Teach Lake County initiative has been around since 2017, and for the first time, it has been given state approval to teach advanced development courses for local educators. Officials say that it will not only help the teachers but will also help with a shortage of qualified teachers, especially in rural and underserved districts. Several teachers from Lake County spent their summers working along their paths to an eventual master’s degree or other advanced teaching certification. Teachers who have been through the program say it’s been invaluable to their professional development and has given them another reason to stay in teaching.

While it sounds serious–he plague wiped out millions of people in Europe in the days of knights in armor–it’s treatable nowadays with modern antibiotics. Still, it can be deadly if not caught early. Experts urge the same precautions as they do for avoiding other insects that carry disease, especially in deep wilderness areas–covering exposed skin, using a good repellent, and staying away from animal burrows where the tiny fleas can hide.
