The Ukiah Police Department says it’s hired two new officers, and promoted a new captain to replace Thomas Corning, who was promoted to chief last month. Capt. Jason Chapman, whose most recent position was Patrol Lieutenant, was sworn in Monday. Of the two new officers, Oscar Acuna has a military background and comes from the San Diego Police Department. The Ukiah Daily Journal says Jacob Newcomb is a recent academy graduate. By the way, the Ukiah City Council has declared this week to be “Police Week in the City of Ukiah.

This Friday, Woodland Community College’s Lake County Campus will host the annual commencement ceremony.Dean Korinda Ebenhack is hosting Friday night’s event and will be joined by representatives from the Lake County Campus faculty and staff, as well as members of the Woodland Community College administration. Lake County News says Dustin Lawson will speak on behalf of fellow graduates. The commencement ceremony begins at 6, and will take place near the 400 Lab located at 15880 Dam Road Extension.

The nonprofit cannabis group Origins Council, in partnership with California State Polytechnic University Humboldt, University of California Berkeley and a few other advocacy groups is hosting a two day conference. The panel will feature their work on the Legacy Cannabis Genetics study. The Mendocino Voice says the project focuses on community outreach and public education to help growers define, document and legally protect the genetics of the intellectual property of their plants. It takes place Sunday and Monday at the Brambles in Philo from 1 to 5p.m both days.

Governor Gavin Newsom wants to reign-in free healthcare for illegal immigrants. So, he plans to cap healthcare the state has been giving to illegal immigrants residing in California. If they’re 19-years-and-older, they will no longer be allowed to sign up for the state’s Medi-Cal health coverage beginning in 2026. Newsom goes on to say that illegal immigrants already on Medi-Cal will have to start paying a 100-dollar monthly premium beginning in 2027. Newsom’s about face does not apply to those under the age of 19. His office claims this will save taxpayers nearly five-and-a-half-billion dollars by 2028.

And, severe wildfires in California from 2006 to 2020 have caused an uptick in deaths from wildfire smoke across the county. According to a new study published on Nature.com, in California Trinity County had the highest death rate. The study found the western U.S. experienced the largest increases due to wildfire smoke, with about 164 thousand deaths nationwide.
