Celebrate Science and Nature is the annual fundraiser for UC Hopland Research and Extension Center. The hope is that this fundraiser will build scholarship funds for all programs for the adults and youth at the Center. Coming up on May 19th, you and other members of the public can meet with scientists and staff members. There will be field tours, a farm-to-table luncheon from Black Dog Catering and that will all be followed by, a live auction. This event will give the community a chance to learn about the research being conducted, support HREC’s programs and enjoy the best in local produce. That event will begin at 10am. Tickets cost $80 for adults and $25 for children. Register online by visiting the HREC website. The registration deadline is May 12. The event will be held at the Rod Shippey Hall, 4070 University Road in Hopland.
Late last month, the Mendocino County Sheriff’s Office made the announcement that five Corrections Deputies recently completed the five-week Adult Corrections Officer academy in Windsor. Those officers were Derek Carter, Gabriel Madrigal, Grecia Quintana-Mendoza, Keith Michelucci and Victoria Shandel. And speaking of Shandel, during the 51st academy class graduation, Corrections Deputy Shandel received the Academic Award, and Corrections Deputy Michelucci received the Heart and Soul Award. In addition, last month MCSO Corrections Deputy Wade Sizemore spoke to Preschool, TK and Kindergarten classes in Laytonville, giving him the chance to tell children about his job and teach them to properly use 9-1-1 in case of an emergency.
Her name was Lorri Duckworth and she had a dream of having a u-pick farm where anyone could come and pick their own blueberries. But that was really only a part of her dream. She was one of those small family farmers, while she loved her produce and her blueberries, she loved even more seeing people reconnect with local food and the sense of history that comes from tending the land and feeding each other. Duckworth died April 25 from cancer. She was 62. She and her husband had finally found the perfect farm on Canfield Road in Sebastopol in 2001. She loved school children to visit and in addition to school children, Duckworth developed a close relationship with the firefighters from the Gold Ridge Fire District, inviting them to the farm on u-pick days and donating berries for their pancake breakfasts. She will be missed by many.
The Mendocino County Sheriff’s Office is celebrating National Corrections Officers Week now through the 11th and in doing so is asking you and me to please remember and appreciate these hard-working employees to on a daily basis provide Care, Custody and Control of the incarcerated population in the Mendocino County Jail. In addition, MCSO recognizes National Nurses Week through the 12th and describes it as celebrating the work, dedication and sacrifice nurses make in the healthcare profession, which also includes the Mendocino County Jail, also stating that the Sheriff’s Office and their contract County Jail medical provider Naphcare will be showing appreciation for those employees working in the Corrections Division.
