The Lake County sheriff’s office has ID’d a man killed in a crash near Upper Lake last week. They say 56-year-old Frederick M. Burns IV died after his pickup went off Highway 20 near Lucerne Road Friday afternoon. CHP continues investigating.

The Bureau of Land Management’s field office in Ukiah wants input on how to improve off-highway vehicle trail safety and maintenance. The BLM says you can weigh in on a virtual public hearing next week. BLM Ukiah Field Manager Nicholas Lavrov says the agency will take that feedback and use it to apply for a state grant for law enforcement, restoration, and maintenance projects on those popular off-road vehicle trails. The state money comes from fees and other charges collected by a division of California State Parks that manages Off-Highway Motor Vehicle Recreation. A woman accused of murder last year in Lakeport has another day in court this week as her trial date gets closer. The Record Bee reports that 39-year-old Melinda Fred will have a hearing in Lake County Superior Court on Friday, with her trial on the docket next month. Fred has pleaded not guilty to charges that she stabbed Christopher Burrows on Red Feather Lane in Lakeport last May. She has been in jail without bail since her arrest.

Lake County Habitat for Humanity is accepting applications from homeowners who need help fixing urgent conditions on their property and can’t afford the work. The Habitat’s Brush of Kindness Critical Repair Program will provide the work for health and safety repairs–things like broken plumbing, electrical work, or broken wheelchair ramps and lifts. The Mendocino Land Trust is celebrating a milestone next month. The MLT is marking the tenth anniversary of its acquisition of Pelican Bluffs, south of Point Arena. They’re planning a special hike on March 2nd from 11 am to 2 PM. The 73-acre preserve is home to the endangered Point Arena Mountain Beaver, several rare plants, and has a creek recovering from cattle grazing. Mendocinolandrust.org has more information.
