A new national report says California still has work to do when it comes to preparing future teachers to teach reading. The study ranks the state among the bottom 12 in the nation, even after California invested about a billion dollars in literacy initiatives over the past six years. State education officials disagree with the findings, saying new teacher training standards are already improving classroom instruction. Even so, the report found California has made progress since its last evaluation in 2023.
