A small earthquake early this morning off the coast–felt by a few people on land in Humboldt County. Seismologists say the 5.3 magnitude earthquake on the Mendocino fault was about 40 miles off the coast of the community of Petrolia. There was also a slightly strong earlier quake farther north, a couple of hours earlier, felt near the California-Oregon border. The USGS says the two aren’t related. Neither quake triggered a tsunami alert.
