With fire danger on the rise, federal land managers are tightening the rules ahead of summer. Beginning Friday, June 5, the Bureau of Land Management will ban campfires, target shooting and several other activities on public lands across much of Northern California. Officials say the restrictions are needed because most wildfires in California are caused by people, not lightning. The affected area includes Lake, Mendocino and several neighboring counties. Anyone caught violating the order could face hefty fines and even jail time.
