You know that little mark on plastics showing they are recyclable? A new California law would eliminate the familiar chasing arrows symbol on most plastics if it goes into effect in October. The reason? Backers of the law say the labels are misleading to consumers because they are on many kinds of plastics that aren’t practical to recycle and end up in the landfill anyway. Packaging firms are already suing, saying the new law is censorship and would only add to their costs to alter or remove the designation, without doing anything for the environment. Some states are already trying to pass the cost of recycling back to manufacturers, but the California law would go further by restricting what companies can claim about the plastics they make. It will be up to the courts to decide.
