The USDA says the production of wine grapes in California continues to drop. The report on the value of last year’s harvest shows that, overall, wineries in California crushed 2.6 million tons of grapes, down about 8 percent. The news from Mendocino County, however, is more positive–production was actually UP 1.8 percent, while in Lake County, it was down 16 percent. Those who watch the industry aren’t surprised–or discouraged– by the production decline. They say the smaller crop reflects vineyard removals, soft wine demand, and seasonal challenges. The first signs of the new crop are just appearing. Growers say the new buds are showing up about a week or so ahead–or behind–schedule, depending on the area. The warm spell should speed up the growth considerably
