Firefighters were called to a mobile home fire north of Ukiah Thursday afternoon. Crews arriving on Ford Road found flames burning through part of a single-wide home and threatening vehicles parked outside. The resident told firefighters he smelled smoke in the bathroom and tried to put the fire out with an extinguisher before it spread. He escaped safely, but the home was heavily damaged and is considered a loss. Investigators believe the fire may have started near the water heater, though the cause is still being reviewed.
