The recent storms have raised the water in Clear Lake, and the county says boaters should be careful when they head out. A county ordinance requires idle speed within a quarter mile of shore when the water is up. Idle speed means no wake, to protect shoeline property from harmful waves. The rule goes into effect when the gauges read 8 feet, as is expected in the coming days. If you make a wake, you could get hit with a misdemeanor fine of up to $500, or even have to dry out in the county jail for 6 months. It’s not just the law. The county says the high water can hide hazards just under the surface or kick up more floating debris that could put a hole in your hull…and wallet. If you spot any hazardous conditions on the lake, you should let the county water resources department know about it.
