A routine crash call turned into something far more serious Thursday night in northern Mendocino County. CHP officers found an abandoned Toyota Tundra off Spyrock Road around 6:40 p.m., and during their search located ammunition and what was confirmed to be a live grenade. Spyrock Road was shut down as deputies and a bomb squad responded, setting up a safety perimeter around the truck. By late evening, units were clearing out and the road appeared to reopen, but investigators are still working to piece together what happened.
