New fire engines are finally rolling into Mendocino County volunteer departments as fire season starts creeping closer. Departments serving Covelo, Laytonville, Leggett, Piercy, and Westport are among those getting new Type 6 engines, with more deliveries expected in the coming weeks. Some of the rigs being replaced were 40 to 50 years old, making them a poor match for today’s fast-moving wildfires and rough terrain. Local fire chiefs say the upgrades are a major boost for rural crews who protect huge stretches of forest and small communities with limited resources.
