There’s encouraging news for salmon on the Eel River, where a record number of Chinook have been spotted this season. A total of 1,324 Chinook were counted at Cape Horn Dam, the most seen there in more than a decade, and steelhead are still moving into the watershed. While numbers remain far below historic levels, advocates say the return shows the fish are still trying to come back. They say removing dams that block upstream habitat could give Chinook and steelhead a real chance to recover.
