California lawmakers are gearing up for another attempt to make kindergarten mandatory. Even with billions spent on early education, the state still doesn’t require five-year-olds to attend school. Advocates say kids who go to kindergarten do better in reading and math and are more likely to finish high school. State Senator Susan Rubio says making it required would send a clear message that early education matters. A similar proposal failed before due to cost concerns, but supporters believe the timing may be different this time.
