More waters will soon be open to commercial Dungeness Crab fishing. The state says the area betweenCape Mendocino and the Sonoma/Mendocino County line will be open on January 15th—after a 64-hour gear setting period that starts at 8:01 on Monday. The area north of Cape Mendocino to the Redding Rock Marine Protected Area remains closed to commercial fishing because of high levels of potentially toxic Domoic Acid in the crab viscera. Vessels that fished in any previously opened areas can’t go into the soon-to-be-open zone for 30 days. There have been delayed openings this season–because of the risk that whales gettin tangled up in gear and the ongoing high levels of domoic acid, in some zones
