The California Department of Fish and Wildlife is taking to the sky to round up deer, elk, and wolves by helicopter and outfit them with GPS collars across Northern California–including in Lake County. The effort will help the department’s understanding of species distribution, habitat use, abundance, migration patterns, recruitment rates, and survival. The collars will transmit data about the animals every day for up to three years. The information about the movement of wolves will also be available to the castle and sheep ranchers to help them protect their herds. The CDFW will work with the USDA Forest Service, the Bureau of Land Management, and on private properties with permission from landowners.
