Scam artists don’t take time out for the holidays. Police agencies say you should be aware of an increase in callers claiming to be with law enforcement–some even using real officers’ names or spoofed phone numbers–saying they have a warrant that can only be cleared up by an immediate payment. The real police say that’s not how they do business and that you should just hang up. And if you’re tempted to engage with a scam call, experts say don’t bother. It only confirms your number is active, offers the potential to reveal unwanted information, and wastes your time more than the scammers, because there are so many of them, you’re not likely to deter them from trying their tricks on anyone else.
