The New Year brings some new traffic laws in California. Among them is an expansion of the Slow Down Move Over law to include any highway maintenance vehicle or stationary vehicle using flashing hazard lights or warning devices such as cones and road flares. Drivers approaching such a vehicle must move into a lane that is not next to the stopped vehicle or slow down to a safe speed if changing lanes is not possible. Also new–a work zone speed safety pilot program that will use speed detection systems that trigger a camera to capture license plates of drivers going too fast. Registered owners will get a ticket in the mail. And starting in 2026, local governments will be allowed to enact ordinances lowering the speed limit in school zones to 20 .
