California lawmakers are asking Congress to protect the state’s authority to regulate the artificial intelligence industry. In a letter released this week, Democratic state lawmakers asked Democratic members of California’s Congressional delegation to oppose any bills that would override AI regulations at the state level. The congressional delegation is also being urged to challenge the Trump Administration’s efforts to regulate AI at a federal level. It comes just a few weeks before a series of state laws further regulating AI takes effect. The letter says the laws establish California “as a leader in balancing both innovation and safety.”
