A warning about eating Dungeness crabs caught by sport fishers off the north coast. The state Department of Public Health says that those organs have high levels of what’s called domoic acid, which can be poisonous. The warning applies to crabs taken from the California Oregon Border to Reading Rock Marine Reserve in Humboldt County, and further south from Ten Mile State Martine Reserve in Mendocino County to the Mendocino/Sonoma Line. The state says it is best to rinse out the body cavity before boiling, steaming, or frying the crab because the toxin can leach into the cooking liquid. The Department is continuing to test samples from sport-caught crab in those areas. Commercial Dungeness crabbing remains on hold because of concerns about whales getting tangled in fishing gear
