TUnderground fiber cable lines in the region could someday be part of an advanced earthquake detection system. Tests in Humboldt County are using those lines to see if they can pick up even small seismic clues of a quake as small as a magnitude one. Researchers are excited by the possibility and say that eventually a network of cables could give a precious few seconds’ warning of a pending quake. The Humboldt test is happening along a section of the state’s so-called middle-mile broadband infrastructure near Arcata. Cal Poly Humboldt will continue to collect data for the next three years to evaluate the accuracy of the information compared to traditional seismographs
