A busy Thanksgiving Eve is well underway on the roads. CHP in Ukiah isn’t reporting any problems so far, but they say you can expect troopers to be out, looking for aggressive, distracted, and impaired drivers–and enforcing seat belt and cell phone laws.
A warning about a Christmas Craft market in Healdsburg–that doesn’t even exist. Police say a flyer advertising what’s called a Joyful Christmas Market is making the rounds, soliciting vendors. The catch-vendors have to respond to an email and then pay to get a space. The flyer even mimics the REAL Healdsburg Farmer’s Market, which says it has nothing to do with If you are a seller, the legitimate market says you should do your homework before committing to markets or events you aren’t sure about. Police say it’s sad that someone would try to take advantage of a legitimate community event. Apparently, there is a similar fake holiday craft market scam going around nationwide.
Storm drain installation on Perkins Street in Ukiah is almost complete, with officials saying the work will help cut down on flooding that often occurs in the area of the Pear Tree Shopping Center. The city says the pipes should all be down soon, with paving starting sometime during the first week of December. The Public Works Department says the end of that project marks the end of the construction season, with over 60 million dollars in infrastructure improvements completed this year. Construction on all city projects will pause on Thursday and Friday.
Also, pausing for Thanksgiving — trash service in Lakeport. That means the pickup schedule is sliding back a day. Thursday’s routes will run on Friday, and Friday’s routes will run on Saturday. The city says to set bins out according to the shifted schedule so nothing gets skipped. Anyone unsure about their pickup can call Lakeport Disposal for details.
If you’re frying your Thanksgiving turkey, the Ukiah Valley Fire Authority is urging you to be very careful. They say you should follow common sense safety guidelines– dry the turkey fully, keep the fryer clear of any structures, make sure that it is on steady ground, follow the manufacturer’s instructions about oil and temperature, and watch the kettle closely. Fire departments say they are called out to fryer fires almost every Thanksgiving–fires that won’t just ruin your turkey, but can cause serious damage or injury.
The pace of Christmas celebrations will pick up quickly now. Among the traditions continuing this year, the Clear Lake Rotary is planning its 32nd annual community Christmas party. It will be December 13th at Burns Valley Elementary from 10 to 2. It will feature a free meal, activities for kids, health screening for adults, and toys for the little ones. Organizers say it’s a chance to bring together people of all ages in a joyful, family-friendly environment in the spirit of the season. Christmas…just 28 days–4 weeks–away.
