A milestone for the new Mendocino County Courthouse that’s going up in Ukiah. The steel skeleton of the building is done, and crews celebrated with a recent topping-off ceremony. The county says the $144 million project is on schedule for an opening in late summer of 2027. When it opens, the courthouse will include 7 modern courtrooms and plenty of space for court workers. There will also be a new 160-space surface parking lot. The new courthouse has been in the works since 2002. As for the OLD courthouse, its future is up in the air. It’s in pretty rough shape, so it would need extensive renovations, but among the options are a public space or plaza.

Members of the Covelo Community will gather this weekend to remember former Covelo fire chief Bill Baker. After a procession to the Covelo Valley View Cemetery at 1 PM Saturday, there will be a public potluck at the Covelo Rec Center on S. Airport Rd. Covelo Community members will be able to share their memories of Baker, who was killed in a crash involving a suspected drunk driver earlier this month. He served Covelo for over 40 years and was well-known in that area.

Governor Newsom is warning that CalFresh benefits will likely be delayed due to the government shutdown. The governor says that unless there’s a deal by Thursday, the state won’t get the cash from the federal government that it uses to fund the program that provides the SNAP Cards to millions of Californians. He says that means the cards won’t work after November 1

An anniversary for a Mendocino County Distillery. The Mendocino Spirits/Tamar Distillery in Redwood Valley recently celebrated ten years of producing bourbon in its stills.
