Lake County is getting ready for the November special election on redistricting. The County Registrar of Voters Office is planning computer and software tests as part of their preparation for the voting on November 4th. State election law requires that counties test the tabulating system to make sure the count is accurate. Officials will run the test on Friday at 9 am at the registrar’s office in Lakeport. It is open to the public. The campaign–pro and con–is in full swing. Both sides are spending millions of dollars to convince voters about the plan that would redraw the congressional lines in time for next year’s vote to give democrats a partisan advantage. The potential changes could impact Lake and Mendocino Counties. Under the proposal, Lake County will be moved into a new District 1, while parts of Mendocino County will be transferred to District 2, potentially impacting local political dynamics and representation in Congress. The state says it will pick up part of the increased cost for the special vote.

You might recognize some locations in Humboldt County in a new movie that’s now in theaters. Parts of the film “One Battle After Another” were shot in several locations around the county. One scene shows Leonardo DiCaprio’s character running across the bridge in Arcata, while other spots were also used for the fictional story. Director Paul Thomas Anderson says he wanted to capture the essence of Northern California when choosing where to roll the cameras. The movie is getting a good buzz too, with some critics saying it could even be a contender for an Academy Award.
