The Lake County Continuum of Care is planning a Community Town Hall focused on the homelessness crisis in the County. The meeting is next Wednesday, September 24th, from 5:30 to 7:30 at the Soper Reese Theater. It will feature presentations from service providers and members of the Continuum of Care committees. Presentations will include space for community discussion and a chance for Q&A. County Supervisor Bruno Sabatier says the crisis touches every part of the community and that solving it will require a community effort. The county behavioral health office has more on the meeting and the problem.
Low oxygen levels may be behind a big fish die-off in Clear Lake. The Clear Lake Water Quality Facebook page–run by the Big Valley band of Pomo Indians–reports several species have been affected, with dead fish washing up on shore. The State Division of Fish and Wildlife says events like this are common this time of year, with low oxygen levels because of warmer water, little wind, and no seasonal churning underwater yet. The dead fish add to the problem because, as they decompose, they pull even more oxygen from the water. If you’d like to document the die off, you can report what you see on the website iNaturalist.com. That data gets used by the Clear Lake Fish Kill Monitoring Project that Big Valley Rancheria established in 2021.
Tense moments in the Humboldt County Community of Arcata after a man who appeared to have a gun under his clothes got into a fight with the city manager during a meeting of the city council. City manager Merrit Perry had stepped in when the man pushed toward the council and refused to sit down, and the two exchanged punches until the brawl broke up. It turns out the gun was actually a Nerf gun, but the guy did have pepper spray and a switchblade. According to Kymkenp.com, he was arrested and charged, assault, disorderly conduct, and disturbing a public meeting. Authorities say the man was no stranger to Arcata City Hall, where he had attended previous council meetings and expressed concerns about the homeless and the Israel-Hamas war.
