Mendocino County is set to celebrate graduates of its Day Reporting Center program with a ceremony this evening. The event kicks off at 5 p.m. at the Behavioral Health Regional Training Center and will honor participants who completed months of treatment, training and regular check-ins. Officials say the program is aimed at cutting repeat offenses and easing jail overcrowding. Local leaders, including judges, supervisors and law enforcement, will be on hand to mark the occasion.
AT&T won’t be walking away from its landline duties just yet after state lawmakers hit pause on AB 470, a bill that could’ve ended its carrier of last resort requirement. Northern California sheriffs told regulators and legislators that rural communities still rely on those lines when cell and wireless coverage goes dark during wildfires and other disasters. The California public utility commission agreed, saying the risks were too high, and the bill was shelved in committee. Local leaders say it’s a relief for now, but they’ll keep an eye out in case the measure pops back up next year.
The California Department of Fish and Wildlife wants the public’s help in shaping its new Statewide Deer Conservation and Management Plan. A virtual workshop is scheduled for next Tuesday, Sept. 16, from 6 to 8 p.m. on Zoom, where people can learn about the plan and share their input directly with CDFW staff. Officials say that feedback will feed into a draft plan set to come out in early 2026. It’s the latest in a series of big game conservation efforts, following plans for black bears and bighorn sheep earlier this year.
An evacuation warning for Fawnwood Drive east of Ukiah was canceled over the weekend. The Mendocino County Sheriff’s Office said The warning went out Saturday afternoon after smoke was spotted and crews moved in, but officials haven’t said how big the fire was or what sparked it. No evacuation zone was ever set, though deputies asked neighbors to steer clear so firefighters could get through. The Sheriff’s Office pointed people to mendoready.org, but so far no new details have been posted.
Residents in Fort Bragg no longer have to worry about City Hallshutting down at lunchtime. The city says it dropped the 12:30 to 1:30 p.m. closure to make it easier for people to handle things like bill payments, voter registration and business licenses. City Hall is now open 9 to 5 on most weekdays, except Wednesdays when staff focus on training. It will still be closed on weekends and federal holidays.
Seniors in Clearlake are getting a boost when it comes to learning technology thanks to a $20,000 grant from AT&T. The Clearlake Senior Center will use the money for classes and one-on-one support so older adults can get more comfortable online, from paying bills to video chatting with family. The check presentation Friday brought out community leaders, including Supervisor Bruno Sabatier and Mayor Russ Cremer, alongside center staff and AT&T representatives. Executive Director Joyce Overton says the grant will go a long way in closing the digital gap for local seniors. The center is at 3245 Bowers Road in Clearlake.
Longtime California political figure John Burton has died at 92, according to his family. Over more than 60 years, Burton served in Congress, the Assembly and the State Senate, where he rose to president pro tempore, before later chairing the state Democratic Party. Governor Gavin Newsom said flags will fly at half-staff in Burton’s honor and that he’ll be inducted into the California Hall of Fame.
