A couple of active fires in Lake and Mendocino Counties. Cal Fire reports a three-acre Cole fire on Bottle Rock Road in Kelseyville is 20 percent contained, with forward progress stopped. It has been burning since yesterday afternoon. Meanwhile, the Pond Fire north of Laytonville is 95 percent contained at 23 acres. It’s been burning for almost a week. Hot and dry weather is expected to continue over interior areas, but should cool gradually, although breezy conditions could raise the fire risk later in the week.

Recess will be more fun for students at the Lucerne Elementary School this fall. The school has a brand new playground to start the school year. The school has cut the ribbon on the newly renovated space, complete with a colorful new structure for kids where kids can climb and slide and burn off energy. It’s designed with safety in mind, on artificial turf that more easily absorbs the inevitable tumbles and stumbles. The upgrade cost around 650,000 dollars, part of a 4 million dollar bond measure approved by voters back in 2016, which also paid for three new buildings and six new classrooms on campus. When the school bell rings to start the 20-25-26 school year Wednesday morning, enrollment at Lucerne Elementary will be around 285.

And with back-to-school, police are reminding drivers to watch for more youngsters on the streets, stop for school buses with flashing lights and both ways, and slow down in school zones.

A volunteer opportunity in Fort Bragg, where the city is launching a new platform where you can sign up and find events where you can get involved. Volunteer Central will include things like planting in parks and supporting community programs. The website has a place to set up a profile and search for opportunities to match your skills and interests. City officials, there are plenty of upcoming events and projects that can use help.

Fort Bragg is reporting progress on its municipal broadband project. Workers are moving into three new areas, and additional crews have been added for more underground boring for the cables. You may notice above-ground activity setting utility boxes where the conduit has already been installed and additional drilling in other areas.
