Lawyers representing Mendocino County Auditor Chamise Cubbison in her civil suit are objecting to a request that the case be moved to Marin County. A motion filed in Mendocino County court states that the County is only attempting to find a more favorable judge and that there is no reason to believe there is any bias against Cubbison in Mendocino County. Cubbison is suing the county for back pay after the judge tossed out the county’s criminal case against Cubbison. She was suspended without pay after the charges that she had misused county funds were first announced in October 2023. The county wants to change the location because it doesn’t think it would receive a fair trial locally. A hearing on the change of venue request is planned for June 20th.

An adopt-a-pet event has cut the population of the Lake County animal shelter in half. At the start of that free event over the weekend, there were 50 dogs and cats waiting for a new home–now, there are 25. The shelter, along with the ASPCA and other animal welfare groups, hosted an adoption day on Saturday. Shelter officials are pleased with the results. Animal Control Officer Wenceslao Rojas tells Lake County News that the facility has just 34 spots for animals that need a place to stay. Rojas says even so, the empty kennels will likely fill up quickly as Animal Control continuously takes in new dogs and cats whose owners can’t – or don’t want to – take care of the pets anymore.

State Senator Mike McGuire, who represents Lake and Mendocino Counties, says a plan is in place to replace him as Senate leader next year. McGuire says the Senate has unanimously voted for State Senator Monique Linon of Santa Barbara to take over in early 2026. McGuire calls being the Senate leader the honor of a lifetime. He also says Limon has the experience and leadership qualities to make her the ideal choice for the position.
