A bit of a scare yesterday at Ukiah High school. Mid-morning around 10 a.m., a report came in saying there was an electrical fire at the school on Low Gap Road, which prompted school officials to evacuate a portion of the campus. Fire crews say the report stated the fire was in the girls’ locker room, which is located inside the main gym. However, The RedHeaded Blackbelt says once they got there, they didn’t see signs of the fire from outside of the building nor when they went inside. What the incident commander did find was a burnt transformer on the roof of the gym, but fortunately no fire.
The Mendocino County Board of Education (MCOE) has two new additions.
Bryana Hinojosa-Swayze, a student at MCOE’s Community School is the Board’s first-ever student representative, and Percilla Stevenson, who’s been provisionally appointed to represent Trustee Area Two through 2026. Stevenson’s appointment to the Ukiah area follows the resignation of Trustee Larry Olson. You should know that Hinojosa-Swayze’s role is as a non-voting board member, yet she will be able to weigh in on reports and take part in ongoing discussions. Meantime, Stevenson is committed to education and healing for tribal families. She brings a unique perspective to the Board.
Firefighters put out a structure fire in Clearlake Wednesday night. The burning building was at 12th Street and Country Club. Lake County News says while this was going on, a second structure was torched and the Northshore Fire support team was called in. The fire was finally contained around 11:15 p.m.
If you like driftwood, Fort Bragg city officials say you can head over to Noyo Beach and start collecting it and other woods that may have drifted onto the sand. You probably already know it’s against the rules to remove driftwood from protected beaches in California, including Noyo Beach, but once a year, city officials allow it. Mendovoice says beachcombers can head over to the beach adjacent to Noyo Harbor with certain conditions. You have to do your scavenging during daylight hours, follow all the rules posted at the beach
and please, be respectful of people and their pets while you’re picking up the driftwood. You have until June 30 to snag some driftwood.
Early yesterday morning, a single car wreck sent the driver to the hospital with major injuries. It happened along the southbound lanes of the 101 just north of Hopland. The driver slammed into a tree, and was trapped in his pick up truck. Mendovoice says an air ambulance was called in and once the driver was extricated from the truck, he was flown to a trauma center.
